Nov 2nd – CARMINA with DIARMAID MOYNIHAN
Carmina began their career in Ireland with their first album Weather in the Heart, produced by Irish music legend Dónal Lunny . They have since then done over 35 tours of Ireland, appearing in many festivals, theatres and arts centres throughout the country.
Carmina’s music blends contemporary acoustic, traditional Celtic and Jazz styles in original songs; the band has a long history and have recorded many albums which have had excellent reviews worldwide. The album My Crescent City, their second collaboration with Dónal, who produced and also guested on it, earned Carmina a major publishing deal with Peter Gabriel’s Real World company and was hailed as ‘…absolutely gorgeous – a masterpiece…’ (Frank Hennessey, BBC Wales Celtic Heartbeat) and ‘… a musical feast – 9+/10…'(www.folkforum.nl) – and voted Album of the Week on RTĖ 1 .
Carmina have recently recorded a new album, entitled Landmarks, at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios; as well as featuring new original material, the CD includes new arrangements of both traditional Celtic and contemporary material, and is released on I&E Records in association with Real World music publishing.
This concert will feature the core Carmina founders – two established professional musicians of the highest calibre who both have strong Irish roots. Singer and songwriter Pippa Marland has ‘a wondrous voice, enchanting and emoting’ (Time Out) and is also an accomplished saxophonist, adding alto/soprano saxes and whistles to the mix of instruments. She and masterful arranger/composer Rob King (acoustic guitar, mandola, bodhrán) compose the songs around which the band weave their magic, crossing musical boundaries effortlessly and blending styles organically into a subtle but powerful original sound.
When touring Ireland Carmina like to include Irish musicians with whom they have a long-standing association, and the foremost of these is Diarmaid Moynihan (uilleann pipes, Irish whistles) from Cork, who will be appearing with them for this concert as their special guest. Diarmaid is widely acknowledged as one of Ireland’s foremost uilleann pipers and composers, and has a long and distinguished recording, performing, and composing career, having performed or recorded with many world renowned traditional music stars. His latest recording venture prompted this accolade from the Irish Times: “Layer after layer reveal themselves with repeated listening as only the best musical outings do.”
